Would these things be here without the wheel?
(P.S. If you haven't noticed, I really like wheels.)

Sewers - without them diseases like Cholera would still be rife and all our cities would still stink. Yet another thing to thank the Romans for!

The wheel is definitive!
i agree the wheel was the starting point for many inventions...

Did anyone see the thing with Jeremy pxman a few nights back where he was tracing the invention of the computer. Apparntly someone made one in the 1850's but the idea was never taken up until 100 years later in WW2. Can you imagine what technological advances there would have been if the computer was used a century earlier.

I am going to answer this question at a very low level. The best discovery was the use of elecricity to generate energy. The best invention in my opion is the electric light bulb and 70 years later the transistor. Then of course comes the smallesh (compared to valves) computer.

The best more recent invention is TCP/IP and Arpranet which has sence become the internet. The internet would probably not have taken off though without the world wide web. For this reason I would say the www is the best high end invention. Thanks Tim Burner's Lee.
