Depends what kind of opinions. In the past I've had both kinds. The first, when your friends don't really 'get' the guy, don't find him attractive, think he's a bit weird, etc. In that case I'd shrug it off and go out with him if I really liked him. The second, when they are genuinely worried that he might not be the best thing for you, I listen to. However, your friends will not always be right, so if its the second type of opinion I'd advise a compromise - go out with him, but keep their warning in mind or something. Hope that helped.

thanx that does help but its the first type of opinions. they just dont get him, hes not really any of their type and they laugh at him bcos hes quite posh. hes also very very clever and i dont think any of my friends will ever learn to realy get on with him. i know their opinions shouldnt realy matter to me if i like him but i know they wont realy give him a chance

Well it seems like he has a bit going for him, and with luck if you really like him they will give him a chance if only for your sake. Your friends taking the piss isn't really a reason to give up on someone you like. If it were me, I'd go for it and see what happens.
