My mum had a blood test on Monday for cancer, she's hasn't been sleeping due to anxiety and so went to the doctors today to see if they can give her any help like anti-anxieties or sleeping tablets. The GP told her that she'd had the test results back on Monday, which was pretty much surprising. He said it might be that the hospital does all the blood tests on Mondays and so she was just lucky that she could have the results back so soon. The results were negative (no sign of cancer) and such a relief.. she's just worrying a bit that it might be a mistake. I mean, that would be awful.

So have any of you had blood test results back that soon? Do you think it could be a mistake?

Some blood tests can take as little as a couple of seconds to do - just because the test was quick, doesn't mean that the results are any less reliable. Your mum's test was fast tracked as a high priority test, be thankful!

My mum had some routine ones done at the GP, and she got a phone call 2 days later. So 2 days from a GP, not sure about a hospital though. Hope your mum's ok

When I had my blood test... in which I laughed and was very amused at how my blood was shooting and filling in the bottles..ermm sorry. Anywho, yeah I got it back like a week later or something. Kinda weird getting it back the same day really. Can't say much. Don't know many who had it back the same day.

Most blood tests only take a few mins, your mums bloods would be a prioity so they would be at the top of the list. It won't be a mistake just cause they did them first and not last - the same amount of time would be spent on it either way. Just try to relax

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a "blood test for cancer" as there aren't many that are that specific.

However, most routine bloods take very little time to actually run on the machine. The delay is in transport to the lab, waiting because other, higher priority samples have to be processed first, then getting the results back to the GP.

I know that's how it works at my local hospital - they have blood test results come out on a certain day of the week, think it's a Monday as well.

Good luck - hope nothing's been misdiagnosed

It depends on the test and where the blood was taken.

If you get an arterial blood sample analysed in A&E, you can have the results 60 seconds later.

Routine venous blood tests done in hospital will produce results within about 4 hours (in theory).

If the blood is sent from the GP surgery, that may add an extra day or so, depending on how the results are sent back to the surgery.

If it's a rare test, it could be done only once per week, or might have to be sent to another hospital - some specialised blood tests are only done at a couple of laboratories in the whole country and are only done once per month or so because they are expensive and very rarely needed.

So basically... it depends. The interval to getting the results tells you nothing about how reliable they are.

I had blood tests done on Monday. The doctor got the results that day as they are based in the same hospital that did the test. I have telephoned my doctor twice up to no(Friday) only to be told that they have the results but the dictir hasnt looked at them yet! Not good practice management as delay is causing me concern and I have now had to make an appointment for next Monday in order to get anyvaction on this. Again, another waste of the doctors time as surely they could look at the result and given this to me over the phone! No wonder the NHS is in such a mess!

Strangely enough the Doctor has other patients to look after...

Hey there. It's best to make your own thread rather than resopnd to older ones cos that tends to cause confusion.

As far as your blood test results go, bare in mind your doctor has a lot of other things to be doing and things more routine blood tests won't be the highest prority. They may have set times to look at blood test results or may just have a lot of things they need to do befor they get around to it. I know it's annoying knowing the results are in and the doctor just has to look at them, but there's a lot more stuff going on behind the scenes and your stuff frankly isn't the most important thing to them. It's not a waste of time, it's them doing their jobs.

Closing this thread now cos it's an old one and that gets confusing. If anybody wants to discuss anything similar please feel free to make a new thread.
