Im totally against this,

the abolsihing of the 11+ and in efefct the abolishing of grammar schools will result in GCSE & A-level performances falling.
Many other countries envy the education system in northern ireland, they won't for much longer if Jane Kennedy has her way.
Northern Ieland is well known for outperforming england, scotland & wales as far as GCSE & A-Level results ago, I fear this will no longer be the case come 2008

If there is no academic selection, those who want to learn and do well will be held back by those who don't.

I hope this does not happen to those across the water in the rest of the UK,

the 'acting' education minister in NI looks set to ruin the education system,
I mean what kind of crap education system sorts people into schools by postcode????

I'm a governor of a Northern Ireland grammar school and have the report in front of me. While it is true that pupils here outperform English pupils at "A" level they actually do worse at GCSE. Too many people here leave school with no, or very poor qualifications.

Success in the transfer test is very linked to social class with only 7% of enrolments in grammar schools from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Perhaps you should read the report before posting on it.

It is very interesting that despite being a governor of a grammar school you are altruistic enough to admit the inequality of the system for the large majority of the pupil population.

I posted the item originally because I have been following the progress of the proposals since it was first put forward and was interested to see that both the Burn's report and Costello report came to the same conclusions. Of course, with the advent of 14-19 curriculum developments, plus specialist status, grammars will naturally evolve and ultimately become obsolete anyway, imo.

Well yes, I was also a governor of a primary school and can see the problems which the transfer test creates, particularly labelling children as "failures" at 11 years.

Our grammar school has a relatively mixed intake compared with some others. Changing demographics will also mean that a greater proportion of the population will be able to choose grammar schools if they so wish.

As governors the problem will be drawing up fair criteria for entry without a transfer test. But there has been discussion about the abolition of the 11+ for as long as I can remember so a lot could change between now and 2008!
the 11+ however, needs to be more difficult if it should carry on because those at the top end of the spectrum and seperated enough, i onli lost like 3 marks on the whole thing! also if it is to work it should be throughout the uk. wher i am it was only in the trafford area, therefore those outside my area who now got to the same school as me didnt even do an 11+, so my result wast used for anything, not even to determine whether i got a place at the school or not, there had to be a seperate entrance exam!

thats my rant for the day, lol

Trafford did have very many problems over the whole question of selection which ended up going to judicial review.
As I have said, I believe that the new 14-19 curriculum giving a mix of academic and vocational availability will mean the grammars will become unnecessary - thus the Labour party will have achieved their aim of doing away with an insidious form of selection without the controversy that a more overt course of action would have caused.

Well I don't know how it is graded in Trafford but in Northern Ireland only the top 25% are given an A grade. 55% get the lowest grade, a D
