The car has an effective power output of 18kW and is travelling at constant velocity of 10m/s. Show that the total resistive force is 1800N.

I'm not sure on how to tackle this. Anyone have any ideas?
thanx :smile:

Power = ∂W/∂t = Fx/t = F x x/t = F x v
18000 = F x 10
F = 18000/10 = 1800N
where F is the force of the car's engine.
Since the car is not accelerating, there must be an equal force F in the opposite direction (resistive force) of magnitude 1800N since the car isn't gaining momentum by Newton's second law, F = ∂p/∂t so resultant force on the car = 0.
