Oxbridge and the military

Hey,

I was just wondering how many oxbridge graduates go on to join the forces. Is it uncommon, as i've been thinking of joining the army after my degree and would like to know how many like minded people there would be at oxbridge.

One of my friends is considering it as a career path. Not sure about anyone else though. I'm sure in a university of this size, you'll find lots of like-minded people.

I would say that its not that unusual at all...there are several societies here at cambridge run by the armed forces - they focus on promoting careers in the forces and developing qualities that they'd like to see in future officers.

Personally I've been accepted into the University Air Squadron, which I know accepts 25 people each year...and both the army and the navy also have similar groups here, probably of similar sizes. If you did get into Oxbridge then you should apply for the army branch, where you'd find plenty of likeminded people - you meet every week I think. At the same time you get to do some really interesting activities, which are all heavily subsided by the forces. It also doesnt commit you to any future service, so you can see if its the kind of career that you'd want to do later on.

Having said all that, I dont think it would make any difference at all to everybody here that you want to go into the army later...like dancingqueen said, you'll find plenty of like minded people here anyway - no need to worry at all. :wink:

My friend does some stuff with the Cambridge OTC and is on an Army Scholarship so she'll join once she graduates, providing she passes their fitness tests etc. Mostly her OTC involvement seems to consist of going to dinners with important people, but there are field things to do as well if that's your thing :wink:

They also all seem to be another excuse for a dating agency...
