# Partial Differentiation watch

1. I need to work out

∂/∂x and ∂/∂y of

f(x,y) = x³+xy²-12x-y²

As part of a question, however I'm not too sure on how partial differentiation works so can someone either go through these two questions (even just the first one) and explain how to do it, or even link to a site that has an indepth explanation?

Thanks in advance.
2. just treat the other as a constant, eg.

∂/∂x (x³+xy²-12x-y²) = 3x^2 + y^2 - 12

∂/∂y (x³+xy²-12x-y²) = 2xy - 2y

its pretty simple, I just learnt it in 5 minutes from a website, just new notation tends to make stuff look harder than it actually is
