# What's my mileage? watch

1. Hey all. I'm in the process of selling my car, and when writing up the advert I wrote '89000 miles on the clock', as the counter reads '0 8 9 1 2 4'.

However, my partner's dad (who is pretty car-savvy; his dad used to be a mechanic and he used to help out in his garage etc.) tells me that if the number starts with a 0, that means it's already ticked over so my actual mileage is 189,000 miles.

Surely that's not true? Can anyone clarify?

I can post a picture if anyone wants.

Surely it would go from 0 to 1 rather than blank to 0? Your partners dad doesn't really make sense
3. Your correct mileage is 89000. Look through the old MOTs and service history and you can track how the mileae had built up and verify it that way.

If the mileage was 189000 then it would say 189000.

Your friend might be trying to say that the car's mileage has ticked all the way over - i.e. been up to 999,999 then ticked over to 000,000 and then done another 89,000 miles making it read 089,000. This is hightly unlikely because it would mean your car would have covered over a million miles!

Thanks I was sure he wasn't right, it just didn't make sense to me at all, but he usually knows his stuff so I was a bit put off hehe.

Tis not true.

He's talking nonsense. If it had done 189000 miles it would say 189000 miles instead of 89000...

My thought is that he secretly wants to buy it off you at a lower price so is trying to devalue it...

I wish that were the case, I'm desperate to get rid of the thing No, he's quite keen for me to get rid of it too, as it's currently taking up half of his driveway ><
7. I fear your partner's dad is either having you on, or is a bit of an idiot.
8. He's probably assumed your car has a 5 digit odometer, which will clock over to 00,000 when you cover 100,000 miles. As you've got a 6 digit odometer it's not a problem till you get to 1 million miles, as stated before. Tell him it's got 6 digits and he'll realise!

Thing is, he must have seen it himself because he took all the photos of my car for me, including the dash pics
