Hi, i have just got a place on the access course at my local college studying social work. As the uni course is so competitive, would i able to do something similar if i don't get on the social work course at uni?

Yeh, you should be able to. I've applied to do an Access to Social Work course in September. The units I'll be studying (if I even get on the course lol) are Social Work, Psychology and Sociology and it says on the course website that it can get you onto a degree in any of those subjects or on a course in a related field. Ask your course leader. Try to get **** loads of work experience. Good luck!

Go and speak to a careers adviser in the college, you could easily make an appointment now before you start the course - I found them very helpful when I spoke with them about possible careers.

I am currently studying in a 1 year fast track access course which is full time and I am studying Humanities (English & History) and not Social Sciences (Sociology & Phsychology) - thought I would have got better grades in Humanities so thats why I chose it over social sciences.

I have applied for the social work degree and am awaiting a decision but had my interview at the end of Feb. I also applied to study occupational therapy and it is something maybe you could consider as a second choice. I also applied to study social policy & sociology in case I didn't get into social work and then I would have had the option of applied for a post grad in social work - although as you said social work is very competitive to get into, even in the post grad too. So I'm glad I got an offer for OT!

    Good luck!
