Ahhh Tree Of Life. I wanted you to be perfect. But you were only very good. Sigh.
Really? I thought it was rather brilliant. :holmes: Fantastic cinematography and production value in general which arrests you even as you're trying to figure out what the film means to you (for me, it came across as a meditation on the place, value or even point of grief in the universe, and in a more general sense a sort of conflict - not quite head-on, perhaps - between rationality and emotion. That's why the 'altruistic dinosaur' makes sense: it suggests the value of nature). It's also comfortably the best Brad Pitt performance I've seen.

Saw Out of the Furnace last night. Really impressed. Don't agree with Dr K's somewhat lukewarm response.

Casey Affleck and Christian Bale are as fine as ever and the writing is good. Superb soundtrack and brooding cinematography of industrial Pennsylvania with a muted palette all add to the atmosphere of blue collar despearation and disappointment. A particualrly heartbreaking scene between Bale and Zoe Saldana and even a nod to the Deer Hunter. Woody Harrleson plays a very nasty character indeed.

All in all an excellent piece of work IMHO.

Have been working my way through 1001 movies you must see before you die. Watched a fair few but still got many more to watch. A good book for a film fanatic in my opinion, though the pages on some films contain spoilers which is a bit annoying, but hey. I also have the rough guide to film, which focuses on the actual directors which is another interesting book

I like it too. Just to dip into after you've watched a film to see if it's in there and what someone else thought of it. Or see what other films are well regarded by a particular director.

Watching Thor atm, it's kind of meh. Not bad, but the first just had some sort of appeal. This one just feels more of the same.

O'Russell on the stage non-stop at the Baftas just reminds me how much of an overrated turd American Hustle is.

I'm not a huge fan (of Bollywood in general) but if you liked 3 Idiots there's a good chance you might like this. There's the same sort of social conscience and the same sort of melodrama (in the descriptive rather than judgmental sense; although I'd say there's also the same sort of thinness in script).

Also, if you haven't seen it already, Lagaan is the same sort of Amir Khan fare. :yy:

Well, they are wrong. Bale gives yet another superb, nuanced performance. And this time, a departure for him in that he plays a simple, gentle man enduring great adversity. It's a heartbreaking performance actually. Particularly in the scene between him and Zoe Saldana.

It's the same show as Film 2013/Film 2012...

And it's just as bad. Claudia Winkleman is corrr but there are many other corrr women in porn, if you have a quick search.

An alternative and better show to watch/put on your Sky planner is The Film Review on the BBC News channel.

My best moments of the BAFTAs:

    - Tom Hank's genuine happiness for Barkhad Abdi's win.
    - Cate Blanchette's speech.
    - “I guess I make a very good case for curbing immigration." - Alfonso Cuaron

    What about your's?

It's one of the film review programmes I watch/listen to. It's better this 'series' as they have guest critics each week alongside Danny Leigh, who can become a bit too much when he's on his own.

I watched Amelie last night. Beautiful movie, I can see why it's rated so well. Makes me think I should look out for more foreign language films. I've seen Amelie, Cidade de Deus, Das Leben der Anderen, Lola Rennt, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo(Swedish version, but may have been dubbed) and I feel like I've watched another one but for the life of me I can't remember it.

I occasionally look at The Film Review instead of enduring Kermode and Mayo if I don't have the energy. Will check out /Filmcast.
