Re-sit Summer 2010 GCSEs?

I know it's fairly far into year 12 but I've decided I want to improve my grade in a few of my GCSEs that may affect my UCAS application. I went to my exams officer and he told me it's too late to re-sit...

Now I don't know if that's a "you're legally not allowed to re-sit those exams, it's too late" or "we're not dealing with those any more".

Does anybody know?
you can do it, just check whether the universities you wish to apply to care or not, if you retake an exam some will exclude that GCSE

I think it may be an 'It's too late because we don't want to pay double'. That was the case with me, I entered late into two exams and had to pay double.
But that was a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it is too late?
