OMG OMG. I think i'm going to apply for a job...my first one.

    http://www.jobs.nhs.uk/cgi-bin/vacde...tion=912595555

Its definately a location I'm looking at moving too, its in a PERFECT area and is a rotational post aswell- I'd LOVE to apply for it, but its far too early. Worth going for it anyway just incase?!
Do it! Oxford JR is FAB! (IMO) I'd love to work there... and neuro ITU would be well interesting I've applied for my elective at JR actually :p: In fact, that's a well jammy job posting... a rotation in trauma and itu would be my ideal job lol! Jammy git

Yeh, maybe im just giving myself a hard time. Im a simpler way we're leveled 1-5, she gave me a 3 but for placements this year i need 4/5s. Im sure its something ill be able to build on with my other placements! Just threw me abit.

Wow, talk about interesting lectures! They sound great, alot better than the usual blah of em eh!?
Ooh that's interesting... we're leveled 1-5 as well... But we only need level 2s or 3s this year... and to qualify pass with level 4s next year...

3rd year lectures begin monday!!! Sooooo many interesting ones this year, i've waited 2 years to have a timetable full of lectures i WANT to go too!

MI management and asessment, ECG interpretation, renal failure, respiratory asessments, resp failure, abdominal asessments,, oncological emergencies, haematology, triaging, systematic asessments, neuro asessments, spinal trauma, chest trauma, deliberate self harm, bruns, perioperative care, surgical oncology AND I get an ambulance placement!!!!!
Oncological emergencies sounds well interesting though! And i reckon burns and trauma would be really good lectures! (Which reminds me..i really want a placement on the burns unit but i doubt i'll get it )
That's really good that they teach you about self harm and stuff too! I moaned like hell to my uni saying why don't we get more basic mental health training.. it's an absolute joke how little we get!
And ECG interpretation... oh god..if i had to sit through that id cry haha.

I've sent an email but not gonna get my hopes up!

    does it sound ok?
I'm enquiring about the job advertised via the NHS jobs website (ref: 321-B5-SPECSURG-01). I'm currently a 3rd year student nurse due to qualify in 11 months time. I recognise any application made now is too early however as the job particuarly interests me and in an environment i've had clinical placements in. I thought I'd ask whether or not you have a particuarly policy regarding my situation, whether there is a specific start time or period you are willing to hold positions?

    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thankyou,

...Just realised my grammar is rubbish. Oh well!

I know this isn't nursing related by i need to vent.
I'm soooo sick of all my gynae problems. I'm so sick of getting my fanny out for doctors. I hate my gynaecologist coz he's an ******** that doesn't explain anything to me or take me seriously - and i think he only doesn't care because i'm young and not wanting kids any time soon. I'm sick of taking tramadol too... it makes me feel like crap! And most of all.. i'm concerned about placement.. it was okay in A&E having to juggle shifts around all the time... i'm out in the community next... and already i have to ask for my second pissing day of placement off to go to a gynae appt. Grr.

On a side note... we've had the "you should get the swine flu jab" talk... I still don't want it... And that's after having to walk around looking like darth vader in an oxygen mask for a shift because the ward is closed full of h1n1 +ve people.

    Ranting, much? :o:

aww, we all need a rant now and again
Is there any way you can ask to see another consultant if you're not happy, what about a pain review aswell? Just push and push, maybe even contact PALS?

I'm sure community would understand, I had to ask for a morning off to go to my consultant appointment back in october and they were really good, I just stayed behind for 2 hours with the nurse on the late shift the day after. They understand these things happen

ah back to placement tomorrow for me. 4/9 weeks done though! Got my 3 weeks of nights when I go back, so i'm hoping it'll go super fast!

It has to be one of my worst placements.

And I was just reading the thing about feeling like your just treated as a HCA - definitely all the time on this placement - like becky said, I do not mind at all chipping in but the hca's on this ward really take the mick. Even heard the nurses saying 'there was only 2 HCAs on today so we had to use the students'. It's so annoying.
I'm coming to the end of 1 st year and I feel like i've not learnt anything!! - still haven't given my first injection arghh :/

God i HATE it when nurses use the line about not having enough hcas so they'll use the students.... I overheard the sister on my first placement use that line and I told them if they wanted to use me as a hca id come back and do the late shift...because i was supernumery and wasn't willing to be used to fill in the numbers when i had learning outcomes to meet. They wouldn't get away with using the students in community / in A&E / critical care... so why should they get away with it on the wards?!

You REALLY need to push to get skills done i think... When i'm on placement, i circle anything on my handover sheet that i want to do that day...and bring it up straight after handover with my mentor... In A&E after handover i used to say "if anyone gets a patient that needs X doing, come and find me!"... That might be an option? Any patient you get in that needs an IM / a wound dressing / an ECG... get in there before someone else does it :p:

I agree with Dani in regards to learning outcomes.

On my previous ward there were 5 students, all my year and we had to really get in there to do some stuff. Bring things up with your mentor if theres something specific you want to do, otherwise its just about putting yourself out there, asking to see/ do anything and seeking out the opportunity. Often easier said than done but always worth a try.

This teaching plan is driving me mad!

Its not only stupid that we have to do it now, even though submission is ages away just because this is the only placement we can carry it out. Doesnt help im on a elderly ward where there arent many people i can teach. Doesnt help we have to get everything verified by uni supervisors and mentors before we can even teach it. Doesnt help we then have to get everything signed again after teaching it. All for one flipping assignment!

On a lighter note, im spending my day with the diabetic nurses tomorrow. Hopefully should be interesting and improve my naff diabeties knowledge.

Ahhh Becky, i LOVED my time with the diabetes nurses! I loved it so much i did it a few times I had great fun inspeciting diabetic feet and wounds and all sorts lol.
Wonder if there's community diabetes specialists i can spend some time with hmmmm....? (Ooh there must be at a gp practice! )

I've just emailed uni asking if i can move back home for my final year... means changing hospitals though... (Same uni just different hospitals) so i don't know whether they'll let me... or whether it's possible. But i can only ask hey. I just don't know how i'm going to afford to live on the crappy bursary (and no student loan!) in the final year on the degree programme otherwise.
Anna, if it's not too intrusive a question...how are u coping in final year on that front? (Also, did u get an email back about that job...?

Mmm not very well. Money is a touchy subject, gonba be a lot of cutting back on nights out, takeaways, clothes. Im going to go cold turkey on shopping at all this year till agency work comes through. Its just typical student finance..

No word on job yet, not fully finished application. Having a last minute dither tbh. Went on a night out last night, smoked a bit and now my asthma is playing up- im so stupid lol. First day of 3rd tomorow..nervous!
