    I remember researching this briefly for my EPQ. As far as I can remember, it was a prediction of classical physics that said a blackbody would emit UV radiation at infinite intensity. For obvious reasons this couldn't be true. The problem was solved by Max Planck who proposed that energy wasn't emitted/absorbed continuously, but rather in discrete packets. This idea was one of the triggers that eventually developed into quantum mechanics.

    It proves that the Rayleigh-Jeans law is wrong. In order to avoid this mathematical paradox, the energy must be quantised. This changes all integrals into sums. The new law is called Plank, and it is the correct law.
