I've added no apps, I've put 914 songs on my play list yet is says it's over capacity by 0.10GB? Surely it can hold 1500 at the least?
Is everyone's like this? It really angers me because it's not 8GB at all...

It depends largely on the size of your music files. Some people use crappy 128 or 256 mp3 files; that will gget you a lot more than using 320kbs or WAV/ALAC files.

It depends oon the coded of the file.

Depends on a number of things - song length and sound quality mainly.

Put simply, if you have a load of short, poorly recorded songs you'll fit way more on there.

I'm sure the capacity of my ipod touch has actually decreased.
According to itunes my 8gb only has 6.something gb of space So I feel your pain!

Edit just to clarify - I mean 6.something in total, not leftover!

Mine only has about 7GB free in the first place, and yeah, it holds about a thousand songs. I'm thinking seriously about just getting a Classic to be honest.

I KNOW!!!! I have an 8GB iPhone and I have got so little space for music. I don't have apps either. So thanks to apple, I am going to have to shell out for a new phone which holds more space for music. *grrrr*!!!

    That's ridiculous!

I haven't added any songs since, but when I put my ipod on charge it said that it's over capacity...it just infuriates me no end.

Thats the operating system taking up the additional space.

It reserves 2GB so it can be used i.e. The touch function etc. So whatever memory it says you only have 2Gb less than that value; really sucks

It takes up almost 2gb?! How annoying. Shouldn't really advertise it as 8gb then really, if you can't use nearly 2gb of it!

You're never gonna get 8 gig for loads of reasons:

    http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1347640

Plus the OS has to be on there, pictures and apps you add.

But do you really need 2k songs before you want to change them again?

Its like 5 days of constant playtime, unless you never ever want to shuffle your songs about, then it should be fine. Or you could just put your entire library on a 320 and be done with this whole furore.

All depends on the quality of your music. If you're willing to put up with 128 then you'll probably be able to fit a fair amount extra on your iPod. There's also the formatted size to think about: 8GB will probably be closer to less than 7GB once its been formatted and had all the apple crapware put on it.

7GB is no where near enough for 5 days worth. Closer to 12GB would probably be more accurate.

Pears and Apples though man, if you want a high cap one, i suppose just get one. They're cheaper too ^^

    They probably rate the capacity at 8GB where G = 1 000 000
    Whereas your music on Windows will be in GB where G = 1024^2 = 1 048 574

That is almost half a Gig already lost, before the OS takes its toll.

I am not sure if that is how Apple rate the iPods' storage, but everyone else in the industry does, and hard drive manufacturers, etc
