I was reading the other day that the average life expectancy of somebody in the UK is now 82 and that by the time we are old it will be in the mid 90's.

I picked 300 years to take out the effect of polution from the industrial revolution given that pollution levels are fairly low now.

My question is why do we live longer? Is it diet (we now import tonnes of vitamin filled fruits)? Is it health (are we just as likely to get ill but have it treated by a doctor or hospital)?

    Opinions/facts welcome.

I always thought this was obvious? But better diet, better medicine and better hygiene.

it's both diet and health as well as medicine. 300 years ago, people wern't clued up as to how we worked, there were no xrays, scans, cancer hardly existed and if it did, it wasn't names. Essentially, we have evolved, to know what is better for us and to know what we should do in order to keep ourselves alive for longer. I suppose it helps that there isn't as much inner country warfare going on as well, mainly external now i spose.
