i think you've probably answered your own question about why they were allowed to vote even though it doesn't concern them - without them, those extra 3 people might have been lost

Oh, I don't know. I think Lord H would speak his mind if he really thought the PM was primarily to blame.

To be honest I'm surprised more didn't vote with him. It seems most of them are so obssessed with seeing Blair fall that they would give up their principles.

today has seen a grave betrayal of students' futures and a travesty of the workings of Parliament - i was disgusted - we were betrayed by the Labour party because the rebels did not stand for their principles - they are gutless = i only hope there is a motion of confidence against Blair on Thursday after the Hutton enquiry - but something tells me this is not going to happen either

if parliament is not a fair environment in which we can improve our lot then what is left - maybe it is finally time for a student insurrection = peaceful non-cooperation etc.

Or 3 more could have voted with the governement and they would have had a larger majority.

I have to say, the post-lady at our hall seemed more put out by these measures than the whole NUS committee combined. Maybe we need some changes there as well.
