Why are dresses either maxi or mini, never in between?! watch

    A lot of the 40's and 50's style dresses are a-line, which means they're pretty much 'free' on the hips. Obviously, pencil dresses and the like wouldn't be suitable, but there's a heck of a lot out there to try.

    A lot of styles look fine if you're just taking up the hem, some would need the lower half completely re-worked of course but if OP sticks to simple shapes and cuts ...
