National service isn't about being a front line soldier. It is about instilling discipline, a sense of pride to ones country, providing support for professional soldiers in time of conflict if required but also having the ability to fight if needed. Anybody who isn't prepared to fight for their country has no right to expect anything from their country in return.
    Phonicsdude, you as so wrong!

The army is all about getting naked

in order to preserve a healthy military and obedient population, all people, at the age of 18 should be required to undergo mandatory military service of at least a one year duration. An exception of this would be Oxbridge students, as the conscription for the countries finest minds would be too great a risk

Obedient population?....finest minds? Ah c'moonnn. This whole thread is just a lure for non-conformists and anti-elitist lefties alike.

Obedient? Dodgy reasoning there. Disciplined perhaps. One years duration yes but with possibilities to serve in areas other than military as well. No exception for any kind of student whatsoever. The damange done to our 'finset minds' by pampering them and excluding them from the essential educational experience of national service would be crippling.
