    What part of London? If you don't travel to central London it's usually cheaper. If you have a rail card that'd take off 1/3 of the cost. If you travel after 10am, and avoid travelling between 4-7pm it should be cheaper. Also try to book a few weeks in advance. Check out the National Rail website.

    Megabus is by far the cheapest route. You can usually get a single ticket for under £10 or sometimes much cheaper. It take 7 hours though.

    For the train...try going Carlisle > Leeds (knocked off a lot for me whenever I do this route) then go Leeds > London or Leeds > Wakefield > London. Either way the Carlisle > Leeds using the 2h 50 stopper service should drop the price.

    You can book the day before. www.megabus.com they leave from Carlisle bus station.
