I can't imagine meeting anybody who spoke 16 languages fluenty who wasn't a bit of a hermit, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

Also, I find it difficult to believe that someone could accomplish fluency in 16 languages.

Edit: I guess it also depends on which languages you're learning. If they're ones totally unrelated then I'd consider that a huge achievement, if it's like "Italian, Castellano, Catalan, German, Dutch, Russian, Czech etc..." then a lot of them are quite interrelated. It's still a mega achievement, but not as much necessarily as if you learned "English, French, Spanish, Welsh, Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian..." if you get my drift.

Not as attractive as someone who actually did something useful like had a degree in a science.

Haha, it depends how old you're going to be when you will be able to speak 16 languages. Probably 50, at that age, the women will feck anything tbh.

I would only find it geeky if you were really stuck up about it and kinda acted "geeky" if that makes sense. Speaking in other languages can be sexy, it just depends on your personality and how YOU are about it lol

Well, if he can speak all those languages with complete fluency, then I consider myself proven wrong.

OMG...is that even possible?! I find it hard to learn a 2nd language let alone speak 16!! God the person would have to be an utter genius and I'd totally applaud them! No I wouldn't think they were a geek, I'd be utterly impressed and I would think it an attractive facet!
It's totally possible with hard work and dedication. Some polyglots speak more than 16 languages. Check out Ziad Fazah, he speaks 59 languages. I will definitely master at least 16 languages. In fact I know several people who are fluent in around 16 languages. They are a rare breed of people, though!

1-3 - fair enough, decent amount
    4- 6- cool!
7-9 - okayy, genius, bit weird but still, fairly cool
    10+ - :lolwut:

I would think it was pretentious.

It would seem to be that if they speak 16 they're doing it for the sake of it rather than because they genuinely love/appreciate the literature and culture behind the language.

Also, to me fluency only counts when they have read a number of the iconic works of great literature in that language and appreciated them.

Well these are the most widely spoken languages, so it'll allow me to go most places in the world without communication problems. These are also the cultures I'm most interested in exploring and so forth.

Farsi is an interesting language and Iran is an interesting culture. Also Persian women are beautiful.

    Nice pic.

I'd like to hear your case for languages not being useful, though.

Well, the implication in your previous statement was that languages are not useful: "Not as attractive as someone who actually did something useful like had a degree in a science."

It depends on your definition of utility, I suppose.

If it were true, I'd feel inferior, since I can only speak a bit of French on top of my normal English.

    But I'd be envious too.

I wouldn't believe it, but if someone could prove it then I'd be stupidly impressed/in awe. It's a cool thing imo.

I'd call bull**** and ask you to prove it.

Honestly, I'd think they were lying.
My history teacher speaks 11 languages and he's only 26.
