    Formal is invariably black tie in the evening, morning dress during the day.

    Lounge suits are informal or, in the parlance of invitations, often 'business attire'.

    TBH I really hate the skinny-black-tie-and-black-suit look. It's much better to go the extra mile and wear proper black tie. Smoking jackets/ velvet dinner jackets (worn with bow ties of course) work as "quirky" alternatives though.
