Best Vietnam song ever. The live version is better though.

"I have to be a warrior - A slave I couldn't be! A soldier and conqueror fighting to be free!"

Also helps that it's one of the best songs on one of the best (if not THE best) classic rock albums ever.

As much as I dislike RATM they are very 'protest-y' songs so I'll give them a shout here too.

Chumbawamba, 12 years before that god-awful single and a heck of a lot angrier...

But really most great protest songs don't need a full band and loud guitars-

    (About the Spanish Civil War)

VEVO doesn't agree with letting anyone on youtube watch Bob Dylan songs.

But the best protest songs are his Masters of War and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall.

Thought this was pretty awesome though:

The best protest songs are the simple, unassuming ones

Nothing too 'protesty' as it were, but I think the chorus in particular is quite powerful

    I adore this song

Cuba Si, Nixon No (Simon and Garfunkel....though Garfunkel didn't want, and had, nothing to do with it ). It was never recorded properly:

A Church Is Burning (can't find a video)- S&G. About civil rights at the time, and the KKK. I have a live verison of this and the audience reaction at the end is quite touching. Also their song 'He Was My Brother' is a tribute to someone who was murdered by the KKK at the time.
    Lyrics:
    Spoiler:
    Show
    A church is burning
    The flames rise higher
    Like hands that are praying
    Aglow in the sky
    Like hands that are praying
    The fire is saying,
"You can burn down my churches
    But I shall be free."

Three hooded men through the back roads did creep
Torches in their hands while the village lies asleep
Down to the church where, just hours before
    Voices were singing, and
    Hands were beating, and
    Saying, "I won't be a slave anymore."

    A church is burning
    The flames rise higher
    Like hands that are praying
    Aglow in the sky
    Like hands that are praying
    The fire is saying,
"You can burn down my churches
    But I shall be free."

Three hooded men, their hands lit the spark
And they faded in the night, and they vanished in the dark
And in the cold light of morning, there is nothing that remains
But the ashes of a Bible and a can of kerosene

    A church is burning
    The flames rise higher
    Like hands that are praying
    Aglow in the sky
    Like hands that are praying
    The fire is saying,
"You can burn down my churches
    But I shall be free."

A church is more than just timbre and stone
And freedom is a dark road when you're walking it alone
But the future is now, and it's time to take a stand
So the lost bells of freedom can ring out in my land

    A church is burning
    The flames rise higher
    Like hands that are praying
    Aglow in the sky
    Like hands that are praying
    The fire is saying,
"You can burn down my churches
    But I shall be free."
