    Hey guys just wondering if anybody could help me with this question...

    When sodium carbonate solution is added to an acid a white precipitate is formed. I think the metal ion in the salt of the acid is barium but what would the white precipitate be?

    Thanks in advance!

    I don't really understand your question but are you basically saying something like this:

    Na2CO3 + 2 HCL ---> 2NaCl + CO2 + H2O

    ??

    I think you are confused here. Adding sodium carbonate to an acid will not produce a white precipitate (as all sodium salts are soluble). You will get effervescence of CO2 and the sodium salt of the acid.

    e.g.

    Na_2CO_3 + H_2SO_4 \rightarrow Na_2SO_4 + CO_2 + H_2O

    There is no barium involved...
