Oh I see. Never heard of them. Is it an all round the country thing or what? Was it good?
I went to one in Wales last year, was pretty good and I quite liked the guy!

yea i thought it was brilliant. i actually managed to sit through and listen to andunderstand most of it. the guy-peter vardy speaks really really well and hes kinda funny too. i regret not applyign for philosophy at heythrop college, his lectures wudda been awesome!
Our school is attending the one in Manchester this Friday (2nd)... anyone else going?

Also, is there an opportunity to buy books, notes, etc there, or do students get booklets or handouts for free?

And if so, are they worth buying?

yea you get detailed lecture notes, and the books are ones which you can buy from the shops anyway but they got special deals. but unless your really into your philosophy and ethics, dont think theyre really that needed for a level.

Our class is going to the Manchester one, but I got out of it on the grounds that I point-blank refused to miss three maths lessons about a week before my interview.

aww dont worry. it is just revision of stuff you do in class in a much shorter time. and u can ask your teacher to get you the notes cos the are really really detailed.

we're going to an ethics one in cambridge in february now aswel. already looking forward to it. dont laugh!
Went to the philosophy course in Manchester...

Peter Vardy is fantastic! He was energetic, engaging and funny, and his lectures were very intense. Haven't had chance to look at the lecture notes yet, but I'm sure they're really good.

He was accompanied by a woman called Julie something, who did one lecture on an argument for the existence of God. She certainly knew her stuff, but her lecture was I'm afraid incredibly boring (to the extent that me & another girl from my school actually fell asleep halfway through).

To be fair, this probably had something to do with the fact that we had been up since 6.30 am in order to catch the train to Manchester, and her hands-free microphone had broken so she had to use a static one (meaning that she had to to stay in the same position talking for an hour).

In contrast, Peter moved about, got the audience involved (tip: stay away from the front rows unless you want to have your clothes and/or love life disected by Dr Vardy), and allowed short periods to discuss things with the people next to you.

Recommended! And we're already booked for the ethics one in the new year

Don't Go! I went to the one in Newcastle and it was so boring, although the notes where good. The ethics one might be different thou

I went to the ethics one in Cambridge last year and it was brilliant. Could have saved me the trouble of going to any lessons, he covered it all in a day. And people tend to go a bit mad and ask him for autographs and photos. My friends did... it would appear he's a minor celebrity in the ethics world.

haha. me and my friends were gonna ask too, but only as a joke!

know what you mean about the sleeping thing marcus! that logn journey doesnt make me tired but makes me want to get up and do soemthign active rather than sit through hours of lectures lol

and i thought julie arliss was good. apparently yhr ontological argument is really hard to understand, but julie managed to explain it in a way which was easy to follow! even my teacher was sayign he normally found that one confusing!

peter vardys really good, bit of a pessimist though! "oh 90% of all your relationships will fall apart when you go to uni, oh most of your boyfriends will dump you within the next 6 months!"

oh the note,s i tired to read it but seriously, it makes my eyes go all blurry!

and now i should get back to revising for my ethics exam tomorrow. :frown: the teachers decided to make us do last years a2 ethics paper, and i cant seem to be able to revise!

Yes, they are. Latest antics: to illustrate a point in Kierkegaard, he lay down on the table and pretended to swim.
