whats with all these faggy "peacekeeping missions" like Iraq and Afghanistan and now libya. **** that, the Romans didnt just go somewhere to help out and keep barbarians from slaughtering everyone, they made it theirs and conquered it, now if libya and iraq are too retarded to run a country then we should go in full force, and make it British build a proper infrastructure with the same system as the mainland uk and rename it to something better. Look at south africa, it was a great place to live after we colonised it and built an infrastructure, now the ANC are in control of it and its going to hell.

Pretty sure the last time this conquering thing was tried properly, WW2 happened. I'm inclined to think that maybe it's not a brilliant idea.

I've been doing a project on the Scramble for Africa today, and from that I'm pretty sure that imperialism has maaaany many negatives. It's so much less simple as the OP made it sound.

    Here's one reason:

don't conquer nuclear capable countries. but the op has a point the British empire made so many places better fairer and more law abiding and these peacekeeping missions are just a chance to show off our military force without gaining anything at least with the empire after we used our military resources we would get the money back from the region that we'd just conquered

Edit : just realised cheaper oil but if we owned the country the oil would be cheaper still

Because, it's about neocolonization now and America's running that game with China looking like the successor. If the EU fixes up, we could dominate.

Things are subtle nowadays; we don't conquer countries but we do conquer markets. If we give the "bad" Libyans a good seeing to, then maybe the nice ones will give us oil; it makes sense in that we do not have to subjugate the population which can get messy which is a problem when we have such extensive levels of telecommunications. Furthermore it's quite handy to be able to fight wars supposedly in the interests of the people.

Because it would cripple our economy to invade countries for no reason - and WW3 would start when people didnt like it?

O our economy is already crippled

Prehaps if all foreigners had stayed out of South Africa and allowed the tribes there to roam free things would have been fine.

Same for the great Indian tribes of North America as well.

The greed of the white man has done nothing but destory the world...

And thats literally destroying it, I don't think that the Zulu tribes or the Teton Sioux would have contribuated to global warming very much if it wasn't for the european monstrosity.

    Edit:
What does it matter to you as a civilian anyway?

Unless you want an aggressive gov. so that you can join the army and become a war hero? You've been watching to many war movies and been playing too many Call of Duty/Medal of Honor Games.

    Mostly because:

    a) We'd get slapped down by the international community.
    b) The economy is now highly globalised and we'd lose a lot of money
    c) It goes against the ideals we have come to stand for in the wake of losing the Empire - freedom, self-determination, justice, peace, etc.

I see you cut out the bit about you being a militry hero, must of hit the nail on the head there.

I said what does it matter to you as a civilian to set myself up for you joining the army and becoming a BIG HERO. You took that quote out of context to make it look better for you.

There is a difference between an anti-war civilain movement and a civilian working a trade for example while his country is invading numerous countries around the world.
