When performing the lunge type hip flex-or stretch (ie this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwToKziL5A4), does decreasing the distance between the two legs increase the stretch (I am little confused)?

i do it with my back knee off the floor, and the further the feet are apart, the great the stretch. at least, that's how it feels for me!

So are you supposed to feel it in the leg in front of you or the other one?

no, the leg behind. your hip flexors run down the frontish outside of your hips and top of thigh. when you drop into a lunge, you should feel that part of your leg stretch.
