What the Highway Code would have you believe. I know that stopping distances vary considerably depending on all sorts of things and many of the comments here make the point so I won't bother.
Of course, whether someone actually knows what 75 feet looks like is another matter...
You still had cars with drums on the front and no ABS back then!
The Highway Code is hopelessly out of date, your best bet is to find a quiet road (aka country lane) accelerate to motorway speeds and then brake hard. Then you will see how long it really takes to slow down from 70 to a stop and people may be more willing to leave a gap on a motorway!
