Please can someone clear this up for me! Coursework is worth 40& of the final grade. But when I asked my eng teacher today if coursework will be able to move my grade up in the exam a little, she said no because it's *only* 40%.
But in GCSE's, cw was worth 20% and it could move it up a whole grade!! O_O
I'm asking because I know I'm gonna screw up in the exam, so I was relying on the coursework to save me, but is there any point if it'll only be able to drag me down rather than push my grade up? Apparently, even if I get an A in the cw and a high B in the exam, i'll most likely end up with a B???!!
Please can someone explain, because I really don't get it.....-.-

Your coursework can move your grade up. Your teacher is wrong.

coursework mark + exam mark = grade
the better your coursework, the less well you need to do in the exam to achieve an overall grade.
If there were 200 marks for the AS; CW = 80 Exam = 120, you'd need 160 marks for an A.
With say 70 CW marks (a very solid A) and 90 from the exam (a good B) you'd reach the A standard overall (160)
the exam mark has a bigger impact because it is 60% of the available marks and maybe your teacher wants to encourage you to prepare better for that rather than invest too much more time to scrape a few more marks from the coursework.Last edited by gdunne42; 25-03-2011 at 09:17.

Well at the end of the day what you get in your coursework is unaffected by what you get in the exam. So say you get 70/80 UMS for your coursework. You need 160/200 overall to get an A at AS, so if you've got 70/80 you only need 90/120 in the exam, whereas if you'd got 55/80 you'd need 105/120, which is obviously harder to achieve.
So yes, your coursework can "move up your AS grade" in that sense, but remember that (if you're carrying a subject on to A2) what really matters is UMS scores, not the grades on the certificate. Your UMS scores are what will be added in to calculate your final grade at the end of A2, so your actual AS grade on the results sheet doesn't matter too much unless you're not carrying on to A2 and therefore certificating that grade.
