    Hi all,

Does anyone have experience of resheduling a university interview?

I've been lucky enough to have received interview offers for Social Work from my last 2 choices, however I confirmed Northampton ages ago and now Salford have got in touch for the same day! 6th April 2011!

Do I tell Salford the truth? Ie. I’m attending an interview at another institution? I don’t want them to think I’ve got a preference for N’ton, it’s just that I confirmed that interview date already (and it was ages ago!). Are they obliged to offer me another interview date?

Why do you have to make a song and dance of it? All you do is telephone, say that the date offered is not possible because of a prior appointment and ask for a new date. Simple. Nothing to worry about at all.

Universities understand that candidates have to go to other institutions for visits and interviews and draw no conclusions from such ordinary events. Stop worrying.

I agree, if this were a job interview, it would be a little different.

For the fact it's a uni interview, I really don't see a big deal.

    Why?
Of course your experience but in mine, companies are prepared to reschedule interviews but only to a certain extent. Of course, managers are still people and will consider the fact you have other arrangements.

But if you reschedule an interview, maybe a few times (not saying the OP would), how would a potential employer see that? Stalling to hold off in case a previous interview gets you a job? If that's case, why should they still see you, if you're confident you got a job elsewhere? It's wasting their time they could use to interview others.

Not saying this is completely true, just from my own experience.

Clearly, if a candidate repeatedly asks for rearrangements that is not likely to endear him to the employer, but a single request is highly unlikely to cause problems unless the interviews are all taking place on one day or are part of a complex process involving lots of people and, for instance, group interviews or workshops. If this is the case then the candidate might well have to stand down.
