I'm a little confused. I thought that you were able to buy alcohol from bars and shops like Tesco once you turned 18 and had valid ID.

My friend mentioned today that you could buy it in a bar or pub at 18, but had to be over 21 to buy alcohol at a supermarket or shop.

I'd never heard about this (and surely if they'd changed the age it'd be a big thing with at least some mention of it) and so had a quick google when I got home, and there was nothing there.

This article from Connexions says that at 18 you can buy in a bar, but doesn't mention shops.

    I'm so confused, TSRians!

No, if you look under 21/25, they have the right to ask for ID.

It's if supermarkets think you look under 21 then they can ask you for id

I'm only 18 and have never had any problems buying alcohol from a supermarket.

You have to be 18, but shops will sometimes ask for ID if you look under 21, it's called 'Challenge 21'

18 to buy alcohol anywhere in the UK. But where I work we have to ask for ID if they look under 25.. Crazy, soon it will be 30 . It's just to give them margin for error though.

As others have said, you have to be 18 to buy alcohol but some shops have a policy where they check ID on anyone who looks under 21, for some places it's 25 I think.

I got challenge 25 when I bought some beer in Sainsbury's today. There's a big difference between 18 and 25!

Well, no, they always have the right to ask for ID, and to refuse you if you can't produce it or they're not happy with it.
