Well aside from my attempt at point scoring with my post...

How do you feel about Lockheed-Martin being behind it?

It does actually seem a little sinister to me... I mean if the government were going to get any defence contractor to do it, surely they'd use Quinetiq or BAE... these being British of course...

Not that I'm advocating mixing the military, private companies and census data...
I would have preferred a British company do to it.

Just fill the census in! I couldn't give a damn if an American company knew what religion I was or what I study :dontknow: They most likely know already!

What's people's issue with the census? It takes 5 minutes and isn't exactly confidential stuff. Just do it and stop whining.

Isn't there a UK law or statute that can potentially prevent Lockheed Martin from giving our information over to the USA. Something that can basically quash the Patriot Act?

Seeing as the Patriot Act was intended to prevent terrorism (So they say ) I would be pretty gob smacked if the US government tried to obtain our census data on such grounds.

At the moment - no. Since Lockheed will be in possession of the data, even if it is in the UK, the US Govt. can ask for its disclosure.

They can obtain any data under the Patriot Act without any media interference/anyone knowing about it because like you said - it was intended to prevent terrorism.

I don't have an issue with the census - just an issue with a US Military arms dealer/surveillance firm doing it.

I'm not convinced. The data will be within the custody and control of the UK subsidiary, not the US parent. The data would not be in the control of the US parent if it would be illegal for UK subsidiary to pass data up to the US subsidiary under UK law, as the US company would have no way to ensure that the UK subsidiary passes on the information where it can't enforce its shareholder rights in UK courts. I am making some assumptions here, but there are ways of structuring this that probably don't come under the Patriot Act.
At the moment all the Govt has got from Lockheed is assurances that the data will be kept safe.

Ok, but why? Have you actually read the census questions? What are they possibly going to use that information for? It's frankly stuff I'd give out to anyone, nothing confidential.

I'm pretty sure the UK government would give census information to the US if it asked anyway, and probably a lot more besides.

write all you answers upside down, it will make it harder for them to process the information, also cross out any barcodes
What will you achieve by doing that? Just a nice sense of satisfaction that you've managed to **** something else up and made things more difficult for some poor ****er who has to go through you form and type the data in manually?

If you want to "protest" then have some balls and just don't return the census.

Lockheed Martin developed the data acquisition system, i.e. the equipment and software that processes the forms. The actual data processing is carried out by British companies (link). Therefore LM don't have access to the data, and so the Patriot Act is irrelevant. Anyway given the government's track record on data security if the US government were interested in the census data they probably only need wait for it to turn up on a train!

Lockheed Martin UK is a separate company...

Nor, do I believe, are they handling any actual data.

    Dude it's a £1000 fine.
Up to £1000. To get the maximum fine for any offence, you pretty much have to defecate on the judge's bench, whilst having been on probation.

"Census Non-compliance teams will be working from 26 April 2011-12 August 2011. You will only get a visit from a Census Non-compliance Officer if you have refused to complete your questionnaire. Refusal to complete the census questionnaire is an offence under the Census Act 1920 and Census Order 2009, and could lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000."

    Good luck with that

Utterly stupid. Don't come complaining to me if the government's ability to adequately provision public services is crippled in the next couple of years because of your inability to fill in a sodding form.

How long does it take before they release the census results publicly? Looking forward to how religion in the UK all divides up.
