    What is the oxidation number of Nitrogen in Copper Nitrate , Cu(NO3)2 .

    I'm thinking that the Oxygen will be (-2*-3)*2 = -12
    But I'm not sure what Cu is to know what the state of Nitrogen will be ?

    when copper forms bonds it has a oxidation number of +2, NO3 has an overall oxidation number of -1. Therefore oxidation number for nitrogen is +5

    Oh and copper sometimes has an oxidation number of +1 but that is really unstable, unless made into a solid

    Thanks

    So Cu(NO3)2

    Cu has 2+ , N03 will have -1 altogether, and that is twice so -2.

    The N03 bracket has to equal -2, so the oxygen will make it -12, Nitrogen will be 5 because when its doubled it'll be 10 ? So 2 +10-12=0 ?

    correct,

    nitrogen is +5 since NO3 has an overall oxidation number of -1.
    yes altogether Cu(NO3)2 has overall charge of 0
    0= -12( -2*3=6*2 )
    N= +10 (5 *2 )
    AND Cu is +2

    -12+10+2= overall charge is 0

    REMEMBER THE oxidation numbers originally are Cu= +2 , N= +5, and O= -2 ( above you jus times it to get to the overall charge 0) practise some more q's on doc brown chemistry .. I hope that helps

    Cu is 2+, so NO3 is -1
    O is -2, so overall oxidation state of -1,
    -1 - (3 x -2) = +5
    N is +5 !

    I know the question was already answered, just wanted to contribute
