    Hello all!!

Any business minded or commercially aware kind of people please read on. I need your help.

If you've not used a pain relief product/ device then you've surely heard of them. Things like infra-red heat massage, transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulation (TENS), ultrasound etc. Just flick through your Argos catalogue and you will get the idea.

Now, what I need to know from any smart people out there is how can I find details on the market shares, consumer trends, profitability and all other businessey kind of facts and figures about these products, companies and industry on a whole.

I am basically investigating these products from the perspective of an engineer (yes, i'm an engineering student), in which I will be conducting a trial of a randomly selected device and looking at how effective they really are in terms of biological and mechanical mechanisms. However, since I am not a business student and not really that sharp in this area I really need someone's help. I hope people can help and am very thankful to anyone who does.

Please feel free to post comments or ask any questions.

Maybe if you get a brand name or something it might be easier to get figures like market share, or if you type the things into google with 'market share/consumer trends' etc that might bring some info up for you

Hi hannahsl, thanks for posting. I tried google and couldn't really find much, I used keywords like 'pain relief markets' and others similar to what you said. Only a few reports available which need to be purchased, some for over £1k!!! If it helps, I have purchased an 'UltralievePro' pain relief device as my random, commercially available and 'popular' product which will be tested soon. Hope this helps.

Already been done. TENS have no demonstrably reliable scientific benefit.

Hey hypo, thanks for your post could you elaborate please. Also, in respect to TENS I beg to differ because I can show you research papers (incl. 2011 publications) showing strong evidence in support of this technology - although most acknowledge that more research must be done, so it is not fair to dismiss this technology just yet. My investigation is looking at ultrasound technology in respect to regenerative medicine, not been done.

there are a few places...first, this data is usually pretty jealously guarded by companies (i.e you will have to use a specialist service or pay). second, with this type of product it is usually the case that far bigger companies make them so the actual details are heavily aggregated and so this makes if difficult for anyone to have any transparency (i.e a P&G that makes 1000 other products and division level sales will be something like "medical" rather than "heat pads"). so my first suggestion would be to utilize the staff at your business school at university, they are usually very good at finding this stuff (you'll find total market size to be the most difficult as well btw).

So there are a few companies that specialize in this sort of stuff. A major one is Euromonitor. Others are Business Insights, Emerald Intelligence, Keynote Market Research, Mintel or Marketline Business Information. Basically, they issue reports about industries and have exactly what your looking for (altho again how aggregated the data is may be an issue). However, this stuff isn't free so to access it you'll need to do it through ur uni. If you look about there will be access to other similar companies that you can use. These companies are usually called "market research" or something similar. Another resource you can utilize is trade magazines. Again this depends on what your uni offers but it is unlikely this will be much help and the first option is better. Either way, the easiest way to go about this would be to contact someone at the business school attached to your university.

If you're at uni it will probably have subcriptions to helpful sites like datamonitor360 or Mintel.com
