You grow up with certain goals in mind, you see yourself doing something particular in the future, you aspire to lead a certain fulfilling life. You use those ambitions and desires to channel it into the motivation that allows you to be the best you can be, and achieve the best that you can achieve.

You gradually start to build up a picture in your mind day by day of what you want your life to turn out as...largely determined by the path you choose, what it is that you do for a living.

You work hard and do what you have to do to achieve that high-profile or high-paying or even the not so high profile/paying but highly-interesting career.

You get the grades, you get the predictions and you apply for the dream courses at the dream universities to allow you to do that dream job to lead that dream life. You're aware that an acceptance is not a sure way to guarantee the success that you seek but it puts you on the orthodox and most sure-way path to achieve it.

You want to be a doctor, an investment banker, a city lawyer........or a nurse, a teacher, an architect. Anything.

Except, you fail to a place in medicine, or a course at a uni that gives you a shot at the elitist city firms, or one that allows you to become a registered nurse, or get the PGCE.

You're disappointed, heartbroken, frustrated. All that hard work, dedication, enthusiasm...all to no avail. Whatever reason it may have been; bad luck of the draw or you're not good enough...either way you acknowledge that it's not happening.

You start to question yourself, your ability and don't feel good enough. Not good enough to achieve all those things you set out to achieve.

You realise that it is time to re-evaluate your life and goals and dreams. Start to realistically think about what path you're heading down and the kind of life you see yourself living. You start to drop expectations and start to settle for things you once thought weren't good enough.

At the end of the day, your enthusiasm, motivation and interest die along with the death of your dreams. You don't work so hard any more, you think just because it didn't bear fruits in the past it never will.
