What always baffles me is why some people think that Chess is a game for geeks :facepalm2: I love it but also love socialising/playing sports/video games etc
    In the UK only!

I believe you have grandmasters hustling in Central Park, not something you'll find in the UK.

In fact chess sponsorship is really poor in the UK. Take a look on the continent and I think you'll find there are many tournaments for all levels with decent prizemoney too!

Chess conjures up an intellectual image. Take for example the film Tower Heist where Ben Stiller was playing Alan Alda.

Anybody, who knows anything about chess, would have resigned, yet it was portrayed as a playable position!

For anyone interested, here is my game against thecrimsonidol:

    Hedgeman49 vs. thecrimsonidol
    chess.com | Dec 2012 | 1-0

    1. e4 c5
    2. Nf3 e6
    3. d4 a6
    4. Nc3 Qf6
    5. e5 Qe7
    6. g3 d6
    7. exd6 Qxd6
    8. Bg2 f6
    9. O-O Nd7
    10. Re1 b6
    11. Ng5 Rb8
    12. Rxe6+ Qe7
    13. Rxe7+ Kxe7
    14. Qe2+ Kd8
    15. Nf7+ Kc7
    16. Bf4+ Ne5
    17. Bxe5+ Kd7
    18. Bxb8 Ne7
    19. Nxh8 g6
    20. dxc5 bxc5
    21. Rd1+ Ke8
    22. Bc6+ Bd7
    23. Bxd7+ Kd8
    24. Nf7#

I haven't played against this version of the Sicilian so I was out of book quite quickly. Obviously the key attack came on move 11, after that I was just trying to find a way to mate. I missed a mate in 7 after 14... Kd8 but it didn't add too much onto the game.

Overall, fairly mistake riddled on both sides but quite an aggressive game.
Indeed, I wasn't on my form for this game, a bit rusty and risked my queen too early on. But a good game.

    Wooo, chess!

    I play the Grivas Sicilian as Black (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Qb6!?)
Only played against that variation once. Gave up the b2 pawn for a massive centre. The queen is also horribly misplaced on b2, and I think if you don't reposition it asap, white can trap it and even then, the wasted tempo - I'm not really familiar with theory, is black supposed to accept the "poisoned" pawn?

Hi guys, has anyone got any tips for improvements? I used to play when I was younger and was probably better than I am now. Any advice welcomed, cheers.

Tactics, tactics, more tactics. The quickest way to improve! Then read books like My System etc. Finally, play as many games as you can! Do you have a grade, BCF or FIDE?
