There's so much talk about the decline of the west in the news at the moment. The baton of global leadership is being passed to Asia and so on. But sod that we should be more concerned with Britain's relative decline WITHIN the West. One hundred years ago Britain was perhaps the richest country in the world although the United States was catching up. Now? Have a look at our national wealth compared to our nearest neighbours:

    Luxembourg: $104390
    Norway: $88590
    Switzerland: $69838
    Denmark: $56790
    Sweden: $47934
    Netherlands: $46418
    Rep of Ireland: $45642
    Finland: $44650
    Austria: $43723
    Belgium: $42596
    France: $40591
    Germany: $40511
    United Kingdom: $35720
    Italy: $33828

So there you have it. If you exclude all those nations which until recently have been misruled by fascists and communists, Britain is pretty much the poorest country in Europe. You can't repeat that often enough. It's staggering and why our media is going on about it day after day after day bewilders me. I suppose we're doing better than Italy however! Also remember that most of these countries are less personally and governmentally indebted than we are. They're growth prospects look a lot better. Oh and don't forget all the super rich in Britain who are pushing the average up! Most of us are doing even worse.

National... Wealth? What statistic are you using? GNP? GDP? GDP per capita? It's certainly not GNW.

Those numbers seem to be plucked out of nowhere. Also, most of us would rather live in 2011 Britain than 1900s Britain. ****, I'd prefer 2011 Britain to 2001 Britain.

Sources, as always, would be welcome.

Lol, if it was 1900's Britain most of us here would be about two thirds through our potential life span and that's not taking the two future wars into account.

Lol, Germany being third to last as the country with the highest GDP. There's something seriously wrong with that statistic.

Dur, Britain has been failing since the Empire. We are nothing without our colonies and the Commonwealth. Especially as our economy now essentially consists of wbanking and hairdressing..

Germany has had to absorb the communist GDR don't forget. It's recovered well from the recession but it's been growing slowly for 20 years.

And yes to those who didn't realise it's nominal GDP per capita.

Britain's economic dominance 100 years ago was largely thanks to its exploitative imperial system, which siphoned off resources from countries like India while straightjacketing these same countries into regulated markets for British industrial products. I'd rather live in the (relatively) less dominant Britain of the present day and know that we are no longer manipulating vast territories and populations for our own ends (though the response to the Libyan crisis shows that this tendency has yet to disappear from our governments' way of thinking).

Britain is tiny in comparison with many other countries I think we do pretty well especially since London is one of the best cities for international business. Also I don't trust those stats why is Germany so low....evidence please.

We have the third biggest GDP
Source? Because this is contrary to every GDP comparison I have seen.

Which counts for nothing, the US has the biggest military expenditure BY FAR but the US is hardly 'high' on the HDI.

Really? Off-shoring and capitalism says we are just as exploitive today than any other point in history, only this time we are screwing our own people as well!

Because we have a population of 60m and the fact Germany doesn't spend any money on defence. They make and sell cars instead.

Germany HAVE to spend atleast 2% of GDP on military due to being in NATO. They have 3rd best military in europe, 7th worldwide, to say they don't spend money on defence is a joke.

okay, but the GDP per capita is flawed, as it does not consider social stratification.
