They have to actually walk out the building, because otherwise they can just turn around and say "sorry, I couldnt find the till". If they walk out the door, they've done the deed.
Even if you have to walk through the tills to leave?!

An old retail manager told me that she once saw a known shoplifter put something into her bag...
The manager then went up to the shoplifter and said, 'Oh I think I just saw that pencilcase fall off the shelf into your bag...'

    Sorted:^_^:

Yup. They could just claim they were getting themselves a basket (since most places keep baskets near the door) or they wanted whatever item is closest to the door but had only just decided etc

Yep, they could claim to have eyesight problems and therefore couldnt find the tills, only once they have physically left the premises are they guilty of theft.

Did she walk out of the door or was she just confronted in the aisle?
I'm not sure tbh, either they approached her and she kicked off, or they let her leave and brought her back in. It was fully legal anyway

Well in the shop I work in we have non existent security and I'm often left on the huge shop floor by myself (No I won't mention where haha). We get quite a lot of shop lifters and I never know the laws as to what you can do/say especially if you see someone pocket an item.

Usually we ring a bell and the manager comes out and we give him a nod and he goes to them and asks them to empty their pockets etc. I thought this was illegal?

Have you ever caught a shoplifter? What did you do?
My manager told me to report someone you have to know exactly what they taken, what size and what colour
