Do you drink alcohol? Why do you drink alcohol? Is it "fun"?

British society seems to have alcohol as socialising, especially amongst young people.

However, there are many cons (health wise!) to drinking alcohol - surely you would be better off without it?

For those who do drink it (to socialise or just by themselves) - why do you do it? Do you do it to drown your sorrows? Lose yourselves? Have "fun"? How can it be fun?

Generally, I use it when Jesus catches me riding dirty.

    It is quite fun

The clearest illustration of this is the fact that people who don't drink never have good stories

    Have fun. It is fun.

Also it goes nicely with food, obviously in moderation.

If I didn't drink, I would gain money & lose weight.

Yepp I drink.... mainly ale like an old Man.

I drink because of the taste, but also it does help me relax quite a bit and a good night on the lash is always a winner.

    Weed is better.

Edit: Not that I care about downvotes, but Cannabis has been scientifically proven to be much safer than both Alcohol and Tobacco. There hasn't been a single reported death from it, whereas people die all the time from alcohol poisoning. Drunk people can get volatile and depressed, people who smoke weed are (from what I've seen) largely a collection of the nicest and happiest people ever. (And only idiots use it as a gateway drug).

tl;dr You're wrong, and you can try to argue with me, but bear in mind that the vast, vast majority of cannabis users are highly clued up on this subject. You'll get your argument ripped to shreds.

Yes i drink alcohol but not alone, only at parties or in social situations. I am normally quite shy and self-conscious, I can't help worrying what other people are thinking about me with everything I say or do and drinking just helps to remove these restrictions and act normally at a party without being worried of what people think, it makes it easier to socialise.

I admit that it does sometimes make you slightly too confident and some slightly embarrassing things can happen but when everyone else is drunk no-one blames you afterwards, I do tend to be a bit outspoken when drunk but people get that I wouldn't normally have said some things and no-one minds.

And it really is fun, have you never been drunk with a group? I don't mean completely off your head but just the right amount makes everything seem hilarious and when everyone else feels the same you can have an amazing time, you have to experience it to understand the feeling.

Alcohol is one of my closest friends. All of my close friends are drugs, by the way.

But the only pros of alcohol are that it is apparently "fun" and "relaxes" you - but in the end, it is bad for you anyway..

I don't want to try it - it seems like a drink that creates an illusion of "fun" and seems to temporarily lift problems... :beard:

because it is a chemical that makes you happy. and ultimately, being happy is good for you.

ok so, if you drink too much alcohol, it no longer makes you happy and instead it ****s **** up. but that does take a hell of a lot of alcohol, more than the vast majority of people will ever get close to consuming.

I don't drink. It's partly because I don't want to make things harder on my liver since I've already got a minor genetic liver disorder, but it's mostly because I don't like the way it tastes and I don't see the appeal. I have fun without it anyway and the sorts of things I like doing with my friends aren't really connected to alcohol. I don't really like clubs that much and most of the ones where I live (at home) are pretty shabby and a bit dirty, so being sober in there is not nice; pubs are far more fun . It keeps my bank balance healthy and I don't have to suffer through hangovers . That being said I have no problem with people who drink as long as they don't cause problems for other people .

I have fun whilst doing competitive sports or hanging with mates, but alcohol seems to create an illusory "fun"..

Can you seriously tell me that the same fun that I have in competitive sports and hanging with mates will be the same as drinking alcohol?
