there are different systems in music and in physics.

    In Physics ...

the first harmonic is the fundamental frequency

the second harmonic is 2 x the fundamental

the third harmonic is 3 x the fundamental etc...

However, sometimes certain harmonics are not possible. E.g. for a tube closed at one end the second harmonic is not possible nor is any other even harmonic.

A higher harmonic which is possible is called an overtone. therefore for a tube closed at one end the fist overtone = the third harmonic
