This is absolutely outrageous. Do you know what actually happens on a year abroad? You either go to a foreign university where the fees are much cheaper anyway or you get a job, and the universities will charge 9k when you're not even studying there!

I'm currently on a year abroad in Russia (so outside the EU and therefore not funded by Erasmus) and am paying half fees for four lousy hours of contact time. It's a standard charge though I suppose. I personally would still be doing languages even with the fee increase, because I can't see myself doing anything else. However, I know plenty of people who are less subject-mad than me would be deterred. My sister has already ruled out the possibility of doing any four year courses at all when she goes to university (she's AS year now) so it could be detrimental. You never pay full fees on your year abroad though, so it would never be as high as £36,000. Would be nice if there were some kind of concession made to keep languages as a viable option for everyone regardless of backgrounds, but we'll see...
