Anyone put off by the Aston area?

As I’m a local to Birmingham I know that Aston has the reputation of not being a nice place at times, for example the shootings on new years 2003, and the recent racial tensions with gangs etc. And I honestly wouldn’t go around Aston at night, though the uni is on the edge of Aston and the city centre has this put any one off? Also what to current students think of the area?

(I’m not trying to put Aston down as its my 1st choice)

aston university is actually loicated about 2 miles away from aston itself.

it is an extremely safe place to be. Although I would not recommend going into aston itself, there is actually no need you should have to. I come from the North East where there is a real family atmosphere (everyone looks after and knows everyone else) and aston is the only place where this comes close.

Hope this puts your mind at rest. I'll get you some figures for you when I'm next back at uni.

Also coming from the North East id agree wholeheartedly.

Iv'e seen no problems while ive been at Aston and the location was in fact my main reason for coming to the university.

No problems.

You obviously don't have much local knowledge at all.

Aston University is based in Birmingham city centre and actually is an extremely safe campus, especially considering it being in the centre of such a large city.

The city centre is a mix of Aston, Ladywood and Nechells (it’s located in the Nechells ward if you want to get technical), take a look at the census data for robberies in these areas. From what people are saying the campus is safe, but I haven’t lived there. I used to skateboard all around Birmingham not to mention I have lived here all my life, who are you to say that I don’t?

you clearly know nothing about birmingham......"aston" as you put it, is atleast 2 miles, maybe more away, probebly more like 4, its near the perry bar sort of area....where you have to watch if your at uce. aston is in a safe place, birmingham doesnt have too much trouble if you stay away from places like aston. The city centre i would say is pretty safe, its a great city stop putting it down. After living in bristol for a few months now, i can tell you its a lot worse here than it is there!

ignore this guy if your applying, hes talking rubbish!

Aston is perfectly safe....except for the geese and the Matthew Boulton nobs and neither of em would attack u unless u deserve it.

Reply 9

mmm geese for dinner anyone? lol ;-).

Take a look at the Birmingham Ward Map , Aston Uni is located left of the Nechells text, tell me how it’s not near to Aston?

When did I say Birmingham City centre wasn’t safe? I said I wouldn’t walk around Aston at night, I simply asked if recent events shown in the news had put any one off. And from what people are saying Aston Uni itself has had no problems.

i've been here over a year now and i haven't had a single bad experience in birmingham ('bad experience' being mugging, random violence, threats, the like). that might run against the trend but i feel pretty secure! on campus especially, there's always someone about. the most dangerous things are probably the geese like indy_punk said

the geese!!!!!!!!! nice to look at but daym.

i got a story for ya.

this time last month or maby even earlier i had a break so i decided to munch on a sandwich near the lake while admiring the view and taking it all in that i actually made it to university. well i started munching while drifting off into a deep thought, by now onto my second sandwich slice. i then realised i saw things moving towards me. not 1 goose, not 2, not even 3, but like 10 or so were slowly moving towards me like they was going to jump me. i tried to scare them away but maaan those geese aint affraid of nothing. i knew if i gave them some they would have wanted more so i legged it....never again.

moral of the story, if you want to eat there, keep ur eyes open and dont drift off!!

but yea, no bad experiences from me either while being at aston. i saw and heard more stuff happen back in london were i live then i hear here.

off to new street. ahhhh aston uni. lavly location.

if you shout bang at them they get scared.

the ward map means sod all. what a load of ****. Try actually coming and seeing for yourself that the Aston Campus is nowhere near the rough areas of Aston you seem to know so much about.

Reply 15

Aston is a friendly area, don't worry about it.

If i can survive, every1 survive to live another day

Reply 16

Aston's in a great location!

As everyone says, the only things that are gonna attack you are the geese! And most of the time they're fighting amongst themselves anyway

Reply 17

I'm from london too and birmingham is much more ghetto than london!! i love it here tho, not had any trouble as yet fingers crossed! u do see some bare dodgy peeps tho!

Safe safe safe. Brum itself pretty safe, you won't venture much further out of the city centre anyway, no need to!
