Discuss the significance of the title'Great Expectations' in the novel watch

    • Thread Starter

Hi, I'm doing a c/w on Great Expectations by Charles Dicken. I am using the title as a sybol in the novel and discussing how characters (Miss H, Magwitch, Pip, Estella) are affected by this. Could anyone help me out a bit?

I don't have 'Great Expectations' for your coursework.

You could say that the title "Great Expectations" is symbolic towards Pip as he transitions into a wealthy, educated respectful man at the end of the novel and the "expectations" he had were on the basis of social mobility? Magwitch had great expectations but was instead left with disillutioned dreams causing him to be thrown in jail. Ms H had great expectations for her future as a married woman however she too was left dissapointed when she was jilted at the alter on her wedding day. Finally, Stella had great expectations for herself, she did not want to associate herself with someone like Pip who was below her social status.
