    Hey everyone,
Don't worry, this isn't yet ANOTHER thread asking about who is the best bank to go with for Student Accounts, etc :P

Basically, I have an unconditional offer and have received the letter. Therefore I'm eligible to open a Student Bank Account (I know I may be missing out on special offers like railcards with NatWest etc) but I'm not really bothered about that.

My question is, if I went and opened an account tomorrow, would the interest-free overdraft facility be available instantly or would it only be made available to me in September when I start?

    Thanks

I've just opened a student bank account with the Co-op, who oddly don't want any confirmation of my status (!?) - their conditions are that as soon as I deposit £300 I can have my £1k+ overdraft instantly. I might report back on whether or not this is actually the case, but according to all the small and large print it should be.

I know I have to pay the lot back within a year of graduating if I don't want to accrue interest, so I will have to keep the total debt manageable - but still, it's slightly alarmingly good fortune!

edit: I did ask specifically whether it'd be available in September/October even though I'm opening the account now and was assured that no, the only condition is the £300 - we had quite a chat about that. Fingers crossed. If not I'll give the bank a gentle poke to inform their advisors a bit better.

For my Santander one, I had a £250 overdraft until I deposited £500 (for me, when I got my student loan). You can only open it after results day, because you need your confirmation letter to open the account. After that, it's £1000 for first year.

The OP already has a confirmation letter as they have an unconditional offer.

Ah whoops, didn't read that part. Probably have to wait until August anyway then.
