I'm by no means an expert on this subject but I've got a bit of a theory...

As standards of living and healthcare rise, more people are living. People who previously would have died from diseases are now living and surviving. As a result 'survival of the fittest' is not happening at all. Desirable genes/traits are not what will drive our further evolution because 'weaker' people will survive. The human race will become weaker and more susceptible to disease.

Although this may not present a problem now, if a worldwide genetic bottleneck occurred or loads of people die (I'm just making this part up) causing healthcare to not be available, then we'd all die.

Ss ill just put that out there...

    Yea that will probably happen.

But I'll be dead by then, so I don't care.

    Woo, eugenics.

Let's stop giving people healthcare, so that only the strong survive.

Hell, why not make people fight to the death to hurry it all up?

In all seriousness though, yes, humans are somewhat shielded from natural selection by our culture. Sexual selection is still going strong though.

Actually, what will happen is germs and viruses will evolve until we can't stop them. It's not that we'll be getting weaker necessary but our reliance on medicine will have caused diseases to be more powerful.

Survival of the fittest could mean: Superbug > Humans
