Why would going to a better uni (for your subject) be a daft decision?

ratings for subjects go up and down, what is known to employers, aunt ethel, and the man on the clapham omnibus is the order in which universities are ranked.
    ....
it may be the case that playing right back for scunthorpe united means playing with a really good player who is playing in central defence. maybe that player is better than the manchester united central defender. but i still think it's better to sign up with manchester united. then you can spend the rest of your life basking in the glory of being a mancunian hero.

Actually this isn't the case. The Nottingham Art and design school (now part of NTU) was established in 1843 making it one of the oldest and most established in the UK.
Ah but the Leeds School of Medicine which evolved into Leeds uni was established in 1831

Well that means Leeds probably has a really good reputation for medicine and other academic diciplines then. However, for product design and other creative diciplines, Trent will have a better reputation as it was orginally founded as an Art and design school in 1843 - making Trent one of the oldest creative institutions in the country. Trent knows this sort of thing is its speciality and therefore invests heavily in it. Leeds is more likely to invest in other areas.

I'm sure you'd be happy at either. I went to NTU, different course and lovely city, product design has great facilities and people have done really well with the course, setting up companies and stuff after, so it does happen. However, as people say, leeds is more established and well recognised. It sounds like you prefer ntu, as you took your portfolio along, they met you and the interview was probably more personal. If you don't like it, you can switch uni's in some cases, though I wouldn't advise it.
