You really have no better place to read a newspaper, or even anything better at all to do with your time? Sounds like your life sucks.

And showing him a little respect ?
:dontknow: as if people on here are perfect. I suppose nobody else here has let their mind wander? Checked their phone? Played on their laptop?

I agree that it is disrespectful, but everyone does it at some point. I don't think that justifies shouting at him. Maybe if he refused to stop reading but there was no need to straight away.

Gosh no. I never want to open those emails ever again

Rest assured that I got called names, threatened with official disciplinary action and that there were loads of capital letters involved
What on earth? Hope you made a strongly worded complaint!

I didn't make an official complaint :nah: Rest assured lots of people heard about it and I appear to have gone down in college history for it

To be fair, i'd be pissed at that too.
That's because you're yet another spoilt little child of the Blair generation.

    Let me make it clear:
    - You are lucky to be in University.

    - You are not 'entitled' to be there.

    - There are people in the world who would kill to be where you are now.

My point? Learn to appreciate what you have, and don't be so bloody disrespectful. Time to grow up and act like the adult you are supposed to be.

I swear you always spoke very highly of your tutor and of the pastoral care in your college? Perhaps I'm getting confused with something else? :s

    lol at this thread.

I've never seen a lecturer shout, and I've been in several lectures where students have fallen asleep and not even in a subtle way, as well as students using phones. The lecturers just ignore them. After all, the lecturers don't have to shout at the student or even calmly tell him/her off if they don't want to. They are not obligated to teach every single student in their course, just those who choose to attend and pay attention during lectures.

However, that's not to say I think the lecturer's actions were wrong. I can easily see why a lecturer would choose to shout at you. Reading a newspaper in class is very rude and disrespectful. If you're going to do that, why attend the lecture at all?

It's the same tutor: he was brilliant in many ways but when we fought, we didn't half fight. We definitely have a love-hate relationship. Half the problem was he liked me and cared too much and kinda turned me into his daughter :ninja:

Pastoral care: I had the worst and the best but the best was amazing and I owe so much to them for that :o:

Funny that. Did I mention anywhere that I DID read newspapers or what not in lectures?!

    I never said you did.

Because I don't like being treated like a child. If I could read mags/newspapers at college, I don't see the problem at uni. If he/she had a problem with it they could have calmly asked you to put it away..
    (Original post by CookieDoughLove)
Because its my choice to be there, therefore if I want to read the paper then I should be allowed to. I am paying for this education afterall - yes reading the paper defeats the point BUT thats not the point i'm making.
It's crap like that I was talking about. The OP acted like a child, and was treated like a child. It's as simple as that.

 why couldn't the lecturer calmly ask him to put it away? Like most people would.

-rep you clearly don't know what you are talking about

The OP knew what the lecturer was explaining so OP was listening.
    lolwat.

If he knows it dont turn up. The man has spent years getting to where he is, not so some pleb can pull out the daily mail in his class.

I haven't been yelled at in person but had two pretty explosive email fights with my tutor, during which he called me lots of names. It was pretty ugly tbh but both times he ended up having to back down
I wish you'd tell us these stories..you're such a tease with them.

It's extremely long and complicated, with lots of back history. Plus the second time involves very private stuff that I don't fancy throwing around the Internet

    In the two fights:

    1) I may or may not have suggested my tutor was an arse and not looking after us properly, unfortunately clashing with a time when he may or may not have had an important lawsuit going on and thus didn't appreciate my doing that. He may or may not have called me lots of names. Another tutor may or may not have threatened to resign over the way we were being treated. He may or may not have threatened me with disciplinary action, whilst desperately pleading with me to leave him alone. I may or may not have pointed out the idiocy of that, which may or may not have caused further rage. His wife and his seniors may or may not have intervened and sorted it out. He may or may not have treated me to a lovely dinner as a silent apology :ninja: :ninja:

    2) For reasons I'm not discussing on here, I may or may not have been banned from talking to my tutorial partners, in an email from my tutor that may or may not have been copied to several senior members of staff. I may or may not have pointed out the idiocy of that, which may or may not have exploded back in my face. I may or may not have been very ill and hysterical at the time and thus may or may not have threatened to never be alone in a room with said tutor again. Tutor may or may not have been *******ed behind the scenes in a fight that may or may not have occured within the senior staff circle, and may or may not have had to furiously backpeddle in time for Easter :ninja: :sadnod: :ninja:

That's not at all representative of Oxford. It's the kinda thing that would have only happened to me. Like I say, my tutor tried to turn me into a wallflower daughter who needed wrapping up in cotton wool and thus got a shock when I turned out to be a gobby girl from Hounslow who wasn't too shy to speak her mind It was all very particular to my background and our personalities.

In any case, I had some amazing tutors (who became really good friends) who put themselves on the line to defend me, which was very sweet. People always had my back and were terribly protective (in a positive sense) of me

Nobody's forcing you to go to lectures...

If you're going to be disrespectful when you're there and 'already knew what the lecturer was on about', why did you even bother going?
