I gave Carphone Warehouse my PAC code today after signing up for a new TalkMobile contract. The migration isn't for 5 days and I'd assumed that I could use the new sim in the meantime.

However, my phone won't even detect the TalkMobile network. I was told by a dodgey sounding advisor that I would have to wait until my old number was properly migrated before I could use my new sim card.

Is this true? Because everyone I know is usually able to use their new phone while their old number is transferring over.

I've never had any dealings with Talkmobile before but usually before a port you can still use your phone on a temporary number that comes with the sim, you then lose signal during the port and your number is switched over.

Maybe ring them up again and try and speak to another adviser? Unless you just can't have a temp number with Talkmobile, I'm not sure..

I'm having the same experience, I've had my new Talkmobile sim for a couple of days with no signal yet. Since that's what's happened to you, hopefully I don't need to worry as much; I signed up online on CPW and supplied my PAC at that point.
