Churchill or Wills?

I have read the halls guide but am still stuck between the two! I think the mix of people may be better at Churchill and it looks like they have a more active freshers week and general social life. But, Wills has the nice old architecture and seems like it has more traditions and character... If anyone could advise me on which one to go for id be grateful...

"The Wills on the bus go rah rah rah,
Churchills take taxis 'cause they're richer by far..."

Both are pretty posh, but I think there are a lot more really posh people at Churchill, which is weird because it's not as nice as Wills.

Wills has a better mix of people. But I would say that....

But if you're in Churchill then you can have a chance of staying in The Holmes in second and third years. The Holmes are SO nice - makes the old quad look like a hovel.
But most cool people choose to live out in subsequent years. I'm not sure I'd want to live in halls after the first year.
id go for churchill, having stayed there its a really nice hall, gud communal facilities and its huge so your never stuck for people to meet. then agen i think so is wills, and wills rooms are bigger, but then again....i dont know is the answer lol. the food in churchill was nice if thats any help?

Personally I'd go for Churchill, mainly because most people don't end up in Wills who apply, and Churchill, though a little bit ugly, does have quite big rooms and great food. Plus if you do actually want to stay in the Holmes then the choice is there.

I'm in Badock, so I'm not biased.

Plus you get to call your hall "The Mansion".

Go to hiatt baker!!!

I hear that churchill is posher than wills, but wills does have gourgeous buildings if your lukcy enough to be put in old quad.

I think the meals/facilities/social scene are mor important than asphetics though.

What's the Holmes?

A second year house across the road from Churchill about the size of one side of Wills Old Quad, and with about 24 people in massive rooms with great kitchen and living areas. It's apparently so good that if you stay in it for second year then you will always choose to stay for third year. Hence it's where Churchill JCR are, basically.
Personally, if I was applying to a catered hall I would go for Badock.

Meals are excellent in wills. Can't complain at all.

Social life is good to, anyone with a problem making friends in Wills would have a problem anywhere. Theres all sorts of people here and plenty of opportunity to meet them. I still meet new people every day.

Best student : squash court ratio of any halls.

Need I say more?

That's one quotient that I haven't heard bandied around very much. Badock, however, has the most empty squash courts per capita.

Want to play squash some time Harry? PM me if you do.

Misguided you are....

- MASSIVE rooms (yes, you could fit 6-8 first year rooms inside my old one)
- erm  , free bar. For 3.5 years.
- A new batch of innocent (and not so innocent) freshers every year...
- The chance to get to know people across 3/4 years, not just yours.
- F*cking good social life as JCR. Do it properly and it's like being an 18-30 club rep at times, especially f/week. Plan and run the hall ball (ie blow £15k+ on a night you organised) and live in the middle of Stoke Bishop (ie 2000+ students).
- No cooking and cleaning needed.
- No bills/no arguments/no hassle whatsoever.
- Cheaper
- And given that all the above is NOT a the cost mates outside halls/other stuff...

...it's the 'wannabe cool' that can't wait to move out and never realise what they missed. But those are the crowd that would NEVER stay in halls any longer than a year, no matter the benefits.

Horses for courses. 95% can't understand why the hell we stayed on. We can't see why the hell they left. The reason ppl hang around is practically never because they couldnt have moved out.

4 years churchill, 3 years holmes. I would KILL to be back there now.

Hmmmm, people think old quad is better at Wills but I think UVW block is the place to be. They have a corridor layout and it makes it a lot easier to make friends. The rooms are also lovely and modern with en-suites. B block sounds like the best but nothing happens in old quad! If you write to the warden you're pretty much guaranteed a place here as well. I love it!!! Good luck to you

What do you mean write to the warden? Do you mean requesting information before you send of your application choice?

Write a letter to him personally saying how much you would love to come to wills, what you could contribute etc etc.

Also come look round with the hall secrartry or another tour and tell him you did in the letter.

I'd probably agree that UVW is nicer overall, but I love having a massive room, and I havent had any problems making friends in old quad; for a start the majority of my friends are in new quad anyway.

But then I am the most wonderfully popular person aren't I, Charlie?

Should someone do this just after getting an offer or Open Day, whichever comes first? Is it a good idea to include your UCAS ID number at the bottom of the letter? :p:
