I haven't actually done this experiment but can describe the preparation.

One thing I'm not sure about though, is what actually happens once its prepared...

Are the stages of mitosis observed in once cell over a period of time? Or do you view an array of cells on the slide, all in different phases of mitosis?

    Thanks

The latter, so through a microscope you see a variety of cells each at a different stage of mitosis and some too that aren't currently dividing. For an image of what each stage should've looked like (though naturally microscopes tend to be useless and for me I couldn't tell anything apart), see here: http://classic.sidwell.edu/us/science/vlb/mitosis/
