Hi can anyone reccomend good halls of residence for York university?
    I want it to be:
    • On campus
    • Close to English department
    • Not too small of a room
    • Ensuite
    • 39 weeks
    • Not single sex

    Thankyou

Look through the University's accommodation pages.

As to the "close to the English department" point, don't worry too much about that- your lectures'll be all over campus. No department keeps all of its lectures within its respective building. Nowhere's more than five/ten minutes' walk from anywhere else on campus either.

If distance is a huge issue for you, don't choose any of the Heslington East colleges (Goodricke, Langwith as of next year?), Halifax or Fairfax House (Vanbrugh, lovely, and 5 minutes' walk from the edge of campus). Any other bit of ensuite accommodation would be fine.

AirRaven is 100% right, lectures at York have no correlation whatsoever to the department, except for sciences, so being near the English department is no guarantee of being able to roll out of bed into lectures.

    Desperately unsure?

Derwent, Vanbrugh or James. Almost impossible to go wrong with those.

All accommodation is 'on campus' though Halifax is quite far and Goodricke and Langwith are on a separate campus, about 10-15 mins walk away. Room size varies, and all colleges have the option for single sex but are predominantly mixed. For infromation on specifics see the accommodation website, what I can tell you is that Alcuin E, F, G, H and J blocks fit your criteria.

It is this year. It's moving onto the new campus (is it next year?) or sometime in the future at least, like Goodricke did. It'll probably be merged into Derwent.

I heard it's next year too. And I dislike Derwent inheriting all of Old Langwith *sigh*

Langwith is moving but I seriously doubt the English department will, seeing as they've only recently finished our common room and installed nice furniture and a TV in there. Can't see them having bothered to do that if they knew they were relocating this/next year.

The last time I had teaching based in Langwith was this time last year (maybe even earlier... I can't remember :lolwut:), so you don't have to live in the same college as the department; everything on the main campus is close together anyway. I only go to the English bit in Langwith to use the common room and hand in essays.

    common room
Which happens to be disgustingly nice.

    English students only? Discrimination!

Haha, debatable. It is supposed to be, but word must have got out about it because both me and others have seen people doing other subjects studying in there, and the Labour club have held ****ing champagne socialism events in there as well. Something about that irked even me, and I'm a member.

Still, studying York's best subject does have its benefits :smug: (I joke)

I remember having this convo with somebody in the Leavis room. The English Dept appears to be really cosy in Langwith i.e. too lazy to move/care. A good thing. Madly storming to Hes East to hand in that rushed essay would be a pain.

A few of the first year lectures are in Langwith, but yea, they're mostly spread out.

I wonder if the dept will label itself as being in Derwent from then on, then... and will the Courtyard not be Langwith's bar any more if all its accommodation is moving? This is all a bit confusing :/

I think it was me you were having the convo with I love the Leavis room dearly, even though I never achieve anything in there any more. It's always too full of people being all hysterical or talkative or moany about how crap our book-filled lives are. Wish we had it last year as well.
